National Health Center Week Wrap Up

By Yvette Crenshaw

Health centers have done it again! National Health Center Week (NHCW) is almost over, but the heightened sense of excitement and enthusiasm will remain throughout the year. Health centers across the country celebrated NHCW by hosting hundreds of events including open houses and free health screenings.

Here are some of the latest stories cited in the news:

Whitney M. Young in Albany, NY celebrated with a ribbon cutting of their newly renovated health center.

Family Health Center in Columbia, MO hosted a community party for NCHW.

Greater Prince William Community Health Center in Woodbridge, VA offered free health screenings.

Milwaukee Health Services Inc., in Milwaukee, WI hosted a back to school wellness fair.

Genesis Community Health in Boynton, FL celebrated its first NCHW by spreading the word about Community Health Centers.

Although NHCW was the main event for health centers this week, a few reports were also released, including NACHC’s new report: Access to Affordable Health Care During Tough Economic Times and a report published in the health journal archives of Internal Medicine highlighting the fact that the number of patients visiting health centers in Massachusetts has risen even though many patients have become insured. Dr. Leighton Ku, Director of the Center of Health Policy Research at the George Washington University and lead author of the report said,

“When uninsured people are no longer uninsured, many people thought they might go someplace else; they may turn to other providers. Actually, to a great extent they continued to seek care from safety net providers and the demand for care continued to be high.”
