This weekend Dr. Jared Bernstein, Ph.D. wrote a thoughtful piece in the Christian Science Monitor about the value of Community Health Centers, including the reasons why future cuts to health centers could be “devastating.” Dr. Bernstein is a senior fellow at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities and spoke this summer to address a general session of NACHC’s Community Health Institute & EXPO (CHI) in San Diego.
Dr. Bernstein is a great resource for translating what vague, technical changes to budgets and regulations mean for actual families. In his post, he breaks down why CHCs are so effective at bending the cost curve:
One of my main interests in the CHCs was how they provide quality care less expensively than pretty much any other players in the game. It looks like it they do it with:
–Health care homes—consistent point of service
–Management of chronic disease (hypertension, diabetes, asthma)
–Avoiding hospitalization and emergency room use
–Low operating margins
