Please join us in congratulating Ms. Donna Sue Vent, the March National Community Health Advocate of the Month! Donna’s connection and passion for health centers started in 1999 when she began working as an LPN at Southeast Missouri Health Network (SEMO) in New Madrid County, Missouri. In her time at SEMO Donna has risen as a force to be reckoned with. Donna charged out of the gate in 2007 signing up more than 250 new health center advocates in less than two months! Of her recent advocacy efforts Donna explained, “You know, I work with a great group of people. I don’t know that I’ve done anything different. The people that work here at SEMO, and the patients we see believe in what we do in the communities we serve. Staff and patients were presented with an opportunity to participate in advocacy activities that could affect them, their neighbors and family members, and they were eager to help however they can.”
Donna proves that participating in advocacy can be simple, quick, and fun…and most importantly EFFECTIVE! The recent health center victory on FY2007 health center funding proved without any doubt the power of advocacy! Health center advocates sent more messages to members of Congress than ever before, securing $207m in health center funding- the largest appropriation in the 40 year history of the program.
