Last week, President Obama re-nominated Marilyn Tavenner as Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the agency that oversees Medicaid, Medicare, the Children’s Health Insurance Program and implementation of major pieces of the Affordable Care Act. Tavenner has been acting Administrator of CMS since 2011, when she replaced the previous CMS Administrator Don Berwick, who was appointed via a recess appointment and ultimately never confirmed by the Senate. Although the Senate did not take up Ms. Tavenner’s nomination in 2011, GOP Senators Hatch and Grassley quickly responded to her re-nomination, stating they hope to hold a confirmation hearing in the Senate Finance Committee to discuss her nomination this year under regular order.
CMS has been without a confirmed Administrator for more than six years . Stay tuned to the blog as we hear more on the nomination and confirmation process of acting CMS Administrator Tavenner.
