The Spirit of Volunteerism Thrives at Health Centers

By Amy Simmons Farber

We always like it when Members of Congress stop by Community Health Centers to see firsthand the great work they do in healing and keeping communities strong.  A case in point is U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey’s visit last week to Open Door Family Medical Centers in Ossining, NY.  The congresswoman not only talked about her support for the mission of health centers (and indeed we could use that support) she also met with Open Door’s Community HealthCorps/AmeriCorps program volunteers and heard their stories from the field.  AmeriCorps started at Open Door just over five years ago and now has 12 full-time volunteers who commit to an 11-month term working in the Ossining and Port Chester health centers. This is happening all over the country, but don’t take our word for it.  Check out more Community HealthCorps testimonials from the volunteers themselves by visiting this link.  You can also read a local article about Rep. Lowey’s visit here.
