Just Say “No” to Flushing Pharmaceuticals

bangorThe Helen Hunt Health Center Pharmacy in Old Town, ME is in the media spotlight for a cutting-edge pilot program to keep Maine’s water drug-free. The health center has received a $150,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency to fund the Safe Medicine Disposal program. The program is designed to help residents counter the adverse effects flushing unwanted medications into rivers, streams and groundwater have on environmental and human health. “We have been telling people for decades to just flush it down the toilet,” Helen Hunt Health Center Pharmacist Lee Ohmart tells the Bangor Daily News. “As it turns out, that’s the wrong thing to do because it’s showing up in the groundwater.”
