Community Health Centers make sure that people can count on them for more than just primary care — some even take matters a step further and offer programs and sponsoring educational events to the community.
One such health center is The Wellness Connection of the Greater New Bedford Community Health Center (GNBHC). GNBHC will sponsor an asthma fair for adults and children in celebration of Asthma Awareness Month by having staff members check breathing and oxygen levels which could ultimately keep patients out of hospitals. The fair will be held May 21, 2010 at the Wellness Connection. For more information about this event and others please visit www.gnbchc.org.
Another pressing issue in local communities is the need for more medical-legal partnerships (MLP’s). According to a new study from the Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services, between 50 and 85 percent of health center patients experience unmet legal needs. “Legal services offered through medical legal partnerships (MLPs) are an excellent example of programs that can benefit the individual patient, the center and the community,” said Julio Bellber, President and CEO of the RCHN Community Health Foundation. The study states that MLPs are currently available at over 180 hospitals and health centers across 38 states. Please click here for the full report.
