Happy AmeriCorps Week! Serving more than 3,000 non-profit, public agencies, faith-based and community organizations, AmeriCorps provides Americans with opportunities to serve communities by helping to meet needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. Every year 80,000 Americans engage in national service programs through AmeriCorps.
NACHC’s own Community HealthCorps is the largest, health-focused AmeriCorps program and promotes health care for the America’s underserved while developing the future’s health care workforce. Community HealthCorps improves access to primary and preventive care for underserved communities by serving as a pipeline for careers in Community Health Centers and serves as a stepping stone for the individual who serves and the communities they serve.
Nearly 500 Community HealthCorps “Navigators” currently serve in health centers in rural, urban, and migrant communities across the US and in Puerto Rico. Navigators who serve through AmeriCorps often function as community health workers, performing a variety of activities for patients and the community.
The Community HealthCorps model is an effective way to deliver health care to those who need it most while building the community’s capacity to care for those populations. From 2010 to 2011 Community HealthCorps Navigators assisted 592,875 medically underserved people; enrolled 62,263 in health insurance plans and other health services and programs; and provided 112,654 people with health education and supportive counseling. Navigators also provided other kinds of assistance from interpretation to parent education to financial counseling and much more.
